Wi-Fi RFID tags get smarter
Just when you thought you had your brain round the difference between RFID (radio frequency identification) and other forms of local-area wireless communication, Aeroscout gave you Wi-Fi based Active RFID. This uses standard Wi-Fi wireless networks to capture information from monitored assets, but RFID for activation and other functions. Aeroscout describes its T2 Wi-Fi based RFID tags as "unique and unparalleled in the market". And now they are even more sophisticated. The latest version can include a built-in temperature monitor and motion sensor. The motion sensor provides transmission control based on movement of the tag, improving real-time location accuracy. The company says it also makes a battery life of over four years a real possibility in most customer environments. Other new features include advanced call button and LED functions; "intrinsically safe" and electromagnetic certifications on the tag; and extendable battery life (up to eight years).
