More carriers put electrics on trial
More carriers put electrics on trial

UK Mail (part of the Business Post group), CitySprint, TK Maxx and James McNaughton Group are among operators now trialling all-electric delivery vehicles.

TK Maxx is using a 10-tonne version of Smith's Newton in its London fleet. It says vehicle can carry a payload of 4 tonnes and will have a range of up to 200km on a single charge. It is being run in association with DHL Exel Supply Chain.

CitySprint, which claims to be the UK's largest privately owned same-day courier, has added a Smith Edison Transit-based electric van to its London fleet. The Edison has a top speed of 50 mph, can carry over 1,300 kilograms and has a battery range put at 150 miles.

James McNaughton Group is using a Modec van for delivering copier paper to London-based customers, and UK Mail is also operating a Modec electric vehicle from its depot in Greenford, West London. The van will be used to handle urban collections and deliveries within London's Low Emission Zone.

CitySprint is already using a variety of other environment-friendly vehicles, including bicycles (it says it has the largest push-bike fleet in London), and the CityTrike, another human-powered vehicle, which is used for bulk and multi-drop deliveries in London.
