More carriers put electrics on trial
![]() UK Mail (part of the Business Post group), CitySprint, TK Maxx and James McNaughton Group are among operators now trialling all-electric delivery vehicles. TK Maxx is using a 10-tonne version of Smith's Newton in its London fleet. It says vehicle can carry a payload of 4 tonnes and will have a range of up to 200km on a single charge. It is being run in association with DHL Exel Supply Chain. CitySprint, which claims to be the UK's largest privately owned same-day courier, has added a Smith Edison Transit-based electric van to its London fleet. The Edison has a top speed of 50 mph, can carry over 1,300 kilograms and has a battery range put at 150 miles. James McNaughton Group is using a Modec van for delivering copier paper to London-based customers, and UK Mail is also operating a Modec electric vehicle from its depot in Greenford, West London. The van will be used to handle urban collections and deliveries within London's Low Emission Zone. CitySprint is already using a variety of other environment-friendly vehicles, including bicycles (it says it has the largest push-bike fleet in London), and the CityTrike, another human-powered vehicle, which is used for bulk and multi-drop deliveries in London.
